Gabions--rock-filled wire baskets--are often used to prevent Erosion and provide stabilization. Gabions have been around for more than 100 years. They are especially valuable in areas that will be wet or will have wave action or high water velocities. The baskets hold smaller rock than that normally used for riprap. The void spaces in between the rock allow vegetation to grow and water to infiltrate into the soil.
The wire mesh used to make Gabions can be shipped either as preformed baskets, mattresses, or rolls of wire, which can be conformed onsite to the shaped needed. Gabions can be filled with rock trucked in or available on site. Special wires are used to closed the baskets. Additional strength elements can be used, such as sheet piling, tie backs.
